Birth of BRICS:

Regarding the formation of BRICS it is important to note that the acronym was originally coined as “BRIC” by the Goldman Sachs economist Jim O’ Neill in his report, “Building Better Global Economic BRICs (Global Economic Paper No.66)”. In this report he stated the following remark “At the end of 2000, GDP in US$ on a PPP basis in Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC) was about 23.3% of world GDP. On a current GDP basis BRIC share of world GDP is 8%.”

Summits till 2023: Important Dates

  • First informal meeting of ‘BRIC’ was held in the year 2006.
  • It was only after 2009 that the leaders of the BRIC nations began their formal meetings and discussed their agendas. The 1st BRICS Summit was held in Yekaterinburg, Russia on 16th June, 2009.
  • In the year 2010, South Africa collaborated with “BRIC” nations and thus the acronym was changed to “BRICS”. The 2nd BRICS Summit was held on 16th, April, 2010 in Brasilia, Brazil.
  • The 3rd BRICS Summit was held in 14th April, 2011 in Sanya, China.
  • The 4th BRICS Summit was held in 29 March, 2012 in New Delhi, India.
  • The 5th BRICS Summit was held in March 26–27, 2013 in Durban, South Africa.
  • The 6th BRICS Summit was held in July 14–16, 2014 in Fortaleza, Brazil.
  • The 7th BRICS Summit was held in July 8-9, 2015 in Ufa, Russia.
  • The 8th BRICS Summit was held in October 15-16, 2016 in Goa, India.
  • The 9th BRICS Summit was held in September 3-5, 2017 in Xiamen, China.
  • The 10th BRICS Summit was held in Johannesburg, South Africa, on July 26, 2018.
  • The 11th BRICS Summit was held in Brasilía, Brazil, on November 14, 2019.
  • The 12th BRICS Summit was held on 17th November, 2020, virtually in Moscow, Russia.
  • The 13th BRICS Summit was held on 9th September, 2021 in New Delhi, India.
  • The 14th BRICS Summit was held on June, 2022 in Beijing, China.

BRICS 2023: Theme

The BRICS Summit 2023 is the XVth Summit and the theme of the Summit is “BRICS and Africa: Partnership for Mutually Accelerated Growth, Sustainable Development, and Inclusive Multilateralism.” This theme reflects the vision of BRICS in providing global leadership in addressing the needs and concerns of the majority of the world, namely beneficial economic growth, sustainable development and inclusion of the global South in multilateral systems. This theme also reflects a belief in the benefits a partnership with Africa can bring to BRICS, with the fellow nations eager to explore opportunities to support, and benefit from, operationalization of the African Continental Free Trade Area.

BRICS Summit

XVTH BRICS Summit Schedule:

XVTH BRICS Summit is scheduled to be held from 22nd August, to 23rd August, 2023. The program of the event is as under:

  1. The first event on the BRICS Leaders’ program is the BRICS Business Forum Leaders Dialogue on the afternoon of Tuesday 22 August. The Leaders will get a report on the outcomes of the deliberations during the BRICS Business Forum and will deliver statements reflecting on BRICS economic relations.

2. Following the Business Forum, the Leaders move to a quieter venue for the BRICS Leaders Retreat. This is a signature event of South Africa as BRICS Chair. Leaders meet in a comfortable setting in a private venue for an unscripted discussion of contemporary issues of importance. There is no set agenda and Leaders can initiate a discussion on issues of choice such as BRICS membership expansion, reform of global governance, or use of local currencies.

3. On 23 August, the XVth BRICS Summit continues with a closed plenary followed by an open plenary session.

4. The BRICS Leaders will deliver national statements which will be followed by reports by the President of the New Development Bank, the South African Chair of the BRICS Business Council and the South African Chair of the BRICS Women’s Business Alliance.
