Assam CM launches Assam Green Mission 2023 to enhance State’s green cover

Assam Green Mission is rolled out by CM Dr. Himanta Biswa on 6th September, 2023 during the course of a press conference in Guwahati. This mission is entitled to increase the green/forest cover of the state and to take initiatives in this direction. Through this mission, the Government of Assam aims to enhance the green cover by 2% adding up to 38% in the course of past 5 years.

Components of Assam Green Mission:

The mission is constituted with the following main components:

• Plantation drive: The Assam Green Mission shall be flagged off with a mega plantation drive on 17 September, 2023. This plantation drive has been named as ‘Amrit Brikshya Andolan‘ and under this drive the Assam Government has targeted to plant 1 crore saplings/seedlings all over the state. So far 47, 34, 465 registrations have been done under Amrit Brikshya Andolan (ABA) portal
• Nurturing: The Mission also includes another important component involved mainly in post plantation which is nurturing process of the planted sapling/seedling. It lays down the objective that it will not only promote plantation but also lay stress on the proper nurturing and growth of the plants so that the forest cover remains intact.
• Establish milestones: The Assam Green Mission is all set to create a number of records from 9th September to 17th September. These are-1. Creation of a longest spiral line of saplings by plantation at Veterinary Ground, Khanapara, Guwahati. 2. To create a record of maximum pledges to be taken for plantation and protection of trees. 3. A vast online session on preservation and conservation of nature and natural resources is to be conducted on 11 September, 2023. 4. On September, 14th, a team at Udalguri will make a record by planting maximum number of trees in 24 hours. 5. On September 10th, the largest seedling/sapling distribution drive will be carried out in a single venue in Guwahati under Assam Green Mission which will break the former record of Uttar Pradesh in this case. 6. Maximum tree plantations to be done in one hour in Dibrugarh on 15th September which will beat Turkey’s record. 7. On 16th September, a largest tree plantation mosaic will be carried out in Digboi beating Turkey’s record. 8. A largest photo album will be created of individuals involved in tree plantation. This will include the photographs that the people will upload in the Amrit Brikshya Andolan portal post plantations. 9. A team of 100 people will attempt to make a record of planting maximum trees in Sibsagar district in one hour.
• Incentive oriented: The Mission is oriented to encourage people towards plantation through incentives. Incentive of Rs. 100 per beneficiary is to be paid on successful plantation via DBT mode. Another follow up incentive of Rs. 200 shall be paid on uploading time stamped and geo-tagged photograph of surviving trees after two years.
• Climate change: Contribution of forest cover is crucial to climate change and the Assam Green Mission has a set target to fight climate change through increased plantations all over the state. However, it is significant to note that we should move beyond just plantation to tackle issues of climate change. For this appropriate nurturing of plants species is also important.
• Enhancing bio-diversity: The Mission is aimed to plant 53 commercially significant species all over the State which would serve as a dual motive. Firstly, it would increase the State’s forest cover by 2% and secondly it would boost Assam tree economy thus adding to its already rich bio-diversity.
• People oriented: The Mission is people oriented as it is an all inclusive drive. The government has asked for maximum people participation in this mission and as of now 47, 34, 465 registrations have been done for tree plantation.
• Bridging the gap: The Assam Green Mission aims to bridge the gap between nature and mankind and bring people one step closer to nature by involving them in plantation and nurturing process.
