Assam Pragyan Bharati Scheme 2023-24: Latest updates and Reforms announced by Assam Government

Assam Pragyan Bharati Scheme was launched by Assam Government in the year 2020. Under this scheme, the government has decided to provide scooters to meritorious students who have qualified the Higher Secondary Examination. This initiative was introduced under the banner of renowned litterateur of Assam Dr. Bani Kanta Kakati and hence is also known as the Bani Kanta Kakati Award. Recently the awards were distributed on 30th November, 2023 by CM Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma in Guwahati.

Objectives of Assam Pragyan Bharati Scheme:

  • To boost the intellectual morale of the students
  • To give direction to excel in the field of higher education.
  • The awarding of scooters to students would give them easy accessibility of transportation and communication for pursuing higher education in colleges and universities.
  • To develop the spirit of competition amongst students and to set targets for themselves.
  • The scheme also intends to empower girl students by providing them tools of independence via two-wheelers.
  • To instill a sense of self-reliance and confidence among students so that they do not feel lagging behind in any aspect.

Eligibility Criteria for Assam Pragyan Bharati Scheme:

  • The scheme is for students qualifying Higher Secondary Examination.
  • Girl students who have secured 60% and above are eligible for the scheme.
  • Boys who have secured 75% and above are eligible for the scheme.

Assam Pragyan Bharati Scheme Latest Updates and Changes:

  • Assam Government has announced the 3rd (Third) Edition of Assam Pragyan Bharati Scheme.
  • Under this new edition of the scheme, those students who have enrolled themselves in graduation courses in the upcoming years will receive financial aid to buy textbooks.
  • The sum of money to be provided is Rs.1000. This will be deposited in the respective students’ bank accounts.
  • The students will have to submit their bank account details through their Principals/Head of the Institution to the Directorate of Higher Education, Assam.

  • Additionally, those students who are residing in government/provincialized college hostels, they will also receive a certain amount of financial aid for clearing up their mess dues.
  • Such students will have to submit their names along with their bank account details through the Superintendent of their hostels to the Principal/Head of the Institution.
  • Both of these financial aid will be disbursed within February, 2024.
  • This will lessen the burden of the parents’ expenditure on education of their children at least to some extent.

Assam Pragyan Bharati Fee Waiver Scheme:

Assam Pragyan Bharati Fee Waiver Scheme for free admission into HS/B.A/B.Sc/B.Com/M.A/M.Sc/M.Com under the Directorate of Higher Education, Assam will be continued in the academic year 2023-24 under which students belonging low family income background will be benefitted. The aim of the scheme is to identify and access the poor students of the state and assist them financially to avail higher education.

Eligibility under Assam Pragyan Bharati Scheme for Fee Waive:

  • The scheme will be applicable to students seeking admission into 1st year of H.S, graduation and post-graduation courses.
  • Students seeking admission into self-financing courses are not eligible for this scheme.
  • In case of H.S and B.A/B.Sc/B.Com, students who availed the scheme in first year of admission can also apply for second and third year of admission.
  • For M.A/M.Sc/M.Com, benefit of the scheme is applicable for final year for those whose fees were waived earlier.
  • Students whose annual family income is less than rupees 2 lakh are eleigible to apply for the scheme.

Institutions Covered under the Assam Pragyan Bharati Scheme for Fee waive:

  • All government colleges, Government Model colleges including PDUAM and Provincialised colleges of Assam.
  • Gauhati University, Dibrugarh University, Bodoland University Kokrajhar, Cotton University, Guwahati, Kumar Bhaskar Varma Sanskrit and Ancient Studies University, Nalbari, Women University, Jorhat, Bhattadev University, Bajali, Rabindra Nath Tagore University Hojai, Madhabdeb University, Lakhimpur, Majuli University of Culture, Majuli, Birangana Sati Sadhini Rajyik Vishwavidyalaya, Golaghat.
  • Private colleges and private universities or Central Universities are not covered in this scheme.
