Falcon festival is an annual cultural extravaganza held in Umrangso in Dima Hasao district of Assam. This event was first inaugurated in the year 2015. This festival marks the preservation and awareness about Amur Falcons, which is the longest traveled migratory bird in the region. This awareness was much needed as many Amur Falcons were being killed out of sport and fun in Dima Hasao and hence their conservation became topmost priority.
About Amur Falcons in Falcon Festival:
Amur Falcons has a strong network with North-Eastern India. They travel across the Indian sub-continent via the Arabian Sea en-route Africa. They originate in Siberia and China and migrate to India in the winter season. In India they halt at Umrangso, Assam for a while and then continue ahead till their journey to Africa. This entire period of stay takes about 40-45 days in total.
In the course of their stay in Assam, previously, they used to fall prey for numerous poachers but in the subsequent years, the Dima Hasao Forest Department has taken various initiatives such as cordoning off the roosting area, generating awareness among the local residents, strict vigilance measures to prevent poaching and killing of Amur Falcons in Dima Hasao. In this connection, the District Administration along with the forest authorities observe Falcon Festival every year in Umrangso.
Falcon Festival 2023: All details
- The Amur Falcon Festival for 2023 is scheduled from 30/11/2023 to 02/12/2023.
- The venue for the festival is Golf Field, Umrangso, Dima Hasao, Assam.
- This festival is celebrated by an NGO called Blue Hills Society along with Dima Hasao District Administration in collaboration with Wildlife Trust of India, Department of Forest, Assam Government, North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council and other local youth forums.
