Sports have always been a top priority in the state of Assam for all round development of its individuals. The Government of Assam has been putting in meticulous efforts to promote and acknowledge the regional sports players. One such attempt is the announcement of Khel Maharan খেল মহাৰণ, 2023. Assam will be hosting a three-month long sports event from 1st November, 2023 to 10th January, 2023. This announcement was made by the Chief Minister of Assam Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma while attending a ceremony on distribution of government job appointment letters to players who brought laurels to the State in the 36^th National Games held in Gujarat.

Latest Updates on Khel Maharan

1.Committees in various levels viz Apex Committee, State Level Committee, District Level Committee, LAC and GP Level Committees have been notified.

2. Operational guidelines have been approved and rules simplified for player’s convenience.

3. Khel Maharan logo, mascot, theme song announced.

4. Sufficient budgetary allocations have been made in all districts

5. A total of 3123 playgrounds have been identified across 35 districts which are fit to host games.

6. A total of 12,69,138 disciplines wise registration have been received so far.

Key Features of KHEL MAHARAN খেল মহাৰণ

• Khel Maharan will be held to identify and nurture grassroot sports talent.
• More than 50 lakh sports persons will participate in 5 major sports- Athletics (100 mtr, 200 mtr, 400 mtr and 800 mtr), Football, Kabaddi, Volley Ball and Kho-Kho.
•  This event will be an all-inclusive effort to include and identify talent in the field of sports from 27,000 villages of Assam.

Khel Maharan Mascot launched:

The Government of Assam has officially launched the mascot for Khel Maharan event and named it as ‘Maharaj Dodan. This mascot has its roots in the Rabha tribe as it is believed to be their forefather. It is endowed with great spiritual powers and the popular belief states that Maharaj Dodan was the nephew of Bana Raja, father of Usha Devi in Mahabharata.

Khel Maharan Theme Song:

The theme song titled ‘Khel Maharan’ was officially launched by CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on 6th October, 2023. The song was composed and sung by popular singer of Assam Zubeen Garg.

Age wise classification of determined division of groups in KHEL MAHARAN খেল মহাৰণ

• Male- under the age of 19 years
• Female- under the age of 19 years
• Male- above the age of 19 years
• Female- above the age of 19 years

Levels of Competition under the Event

As the event will move on, the players will be qualified stage wise under the following four levels-

• Level 1: At Gaon Panchayat/ Local Municipal Board/Ward and Bodoland Territorial Region, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council and Dima Hasao Autonomous Council, Gaon Parishad Unnayan Samiti/ Mising Autonomous Council level.
• Level 2: At Legislative Assembly Constituency (LAC) level
• Level 3: At District level
• Level 4: At State level.

Locations for the Levels of the Event

The following five locations will host a specific level of final round of the event (Level -1,2,3,4)

• Guwahati
• Dibrugarh
• Silchar
• Kokrajhar
• Diphu

This event would definitely inspire the youth of the State of Assam to participate and indulge themselves in future avenues in the field of sports and compete equally in the national as well as international levels. Identifying sport potentials from the grassroot is also a major development in this regard. The recent past of sports in Assam has been quite inspiring as we take pride in acknowledging the achievements of Hima Das, Lovlina Borgohain, Jintimoni Kalita and others. Hence this event would be a sort of grooming platform for the budding native sportspersons with the support of the Government.

As per latest developments on the mega event of ‘Khel Maharan’, a District-level meeting was recently held in Dispur Guwahati. The District authorities were asked to keep track and pace up preparations as the event is due after on October.

Khel Maharan State Level Competition Dates and Venue Announced:

• Football- (Over 19yrs Boys): 29 January to 2nd February at Sonitpur
• Football- (Under 19yrs Boys and Girls): 30 January to 3rd February at Karbi Anglong- Diphu and Bokajan
• Kabaddi- From 3rd to 6th February at Guwahati
• Kho-Kho: From 4th to 7th February at Cachar
• Volleyball: From 6th to 11th February at Dibrugarh
• Athletics: From 7th to 10th February at Kokrajhar
