Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University KKHSOU, the only State Open University in North East India, was founded under the KKHSOU Act, 2005, passed by the Government of Assam and published in the Assam Gazette (extraordinary) on 29/09/2005. The university received recognition from the former Distance Education Council (DEC), (now Distance Education Bureau, UGC), New Delhi through letter no. DEC/Misc/07/5957 dated 03/10/2007.
The University Grants Commission, in a letter dated 18/03/2009 with reference no. F.9-13/2008(CPP-I), empowered the university to confer Degrees under Section 22 of the UGC Act, 1956. Established as the 14th Open University in India, alongside IGNOU, the University’s Headquarters is situated at Patgaon, Rani, Guwahati. It commenced operations with the appointment of Prof. Srinath Baruah, former Professor in the Department of Economics at Gauhati University, as its founder Vice-Chancellor.

KKHSOU admission for the session July 2026 is now LIVE. The official process of admission has begun from 1st July 2026. For its first semester programs, the Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University KKHSOU has formally launched admissions for the July 2026 session. Online applications for a variety of Undergraduate (UG), Postgraduate (PG), Diploma, and Certificate programs are now available to students looking for convenient higher education through Open and Distance Learning (ODL).
Working individuals, homemakers, students getting ready for higher-level exams, government job exams, and students unable to attend traditional institutions can all benefit greatly from the university. Admission to various courses of UG, PG, Certificate as well as Diploma courses can be availed through ONLINE mode only.

Detail Online Admission Process- KKHSOU

The online admission has begun from 1st July, 2026. However the last date for admission has not yet been officially announced. Learners can go through the web portal and derive all relevant information from the official website. The admission portal opens at 6:00 am in the morning and remains in operation till 11:59 at midnight. The admission process is completely ONLINE based and no offline applications will be accepted at the University campus. The admission procedure involves the following steps:
STEP 1: Filling up of personal details- such as name (as on Adhaar card), Date of Birth, Age, Sex, Email ID, Mobile Number (please provide active email ID and mobile number for all important future communications and receiving OTPs, marksheet and examination related information). It is important to note that students will also have to generate their ABC ID using their PAN card or Adhaar Card.
STEP 2: Uploading Documents- Documents such as 10th marksheet, 10+2 marksheet, Graduation Marksheet, ID card, Photograph and Signature needs to be uploaded.
STEP 3: Programme Selection: Learners can select from a wide range of programmes as per the eligibility criteria given and listed in the portal.
STEP 4: Once all details are duly filled, learners can once again preview their application and click on ‘Proceed’
STEP 5: The next step is fee payment which can be done through mobile/internet banking or through any UPI Payment app. Upon successful payment, a fee payment receipt will be generated and the learner will receive a text message of successful submission of application form. The learner can also immediately download their University Identity card from the portal.
However, it is noteworthy that Physically Challenged Learners are exempted of the fee upon submission of relevant documents and approval from the authority.
