PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana PMSGMBY is an initiative launched by Government of India to facilitate sustainable development through the use of solar or renewable energy. The Union Cabinet has approved the scheme for installing roof top solar and providing free electricity upto 300 units every month for 1 cr households. The sole aim of this scheme is to increase the adoption of solar rooftop capacity and empower residential households to generate their own electricity.
The successful implementation of the scheme lies om comprehensive training of Solar Technicians across India. The skilling component aims to establish a skilled workforce capable of installing, maintaining and supporting widespread technology usage. The PMSGMBY scheme will also generate opportunities for around 1,00,000 Solar PV Technicians.

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana PMSGMBY- Benefits
- The following are the subsidiary benefits of PMSGMBY Scheme:
- Subsidy for Residential Households:
- Rs. 30,000 per kW up to 2 kW.
- Rs. 18,000 per kW for additional capacity up to 3 kW.
- Rs. 78,000 total subsidy for systems larger than 3 kW capped at.
- Subsidy for GHS/RWA (Group Housing Society/Resident Welfare Association):
- Rs. 18,000 per kW for common facilities, including EV charging, up to 500 kW Capacity (@3 kW per house) with the upper limit being inclusive of individual rooftop plants installed by individual residents in the GHS/RWA.
- Additional Subsidy:
- For special states, an additional 10% subsidy will be applicable per kW.
- Suitable Rooftop Solar Plant Capacity for Households:
- Average Monthly Electricity Consumption: 0–150 units → Suitable Rooftop Solar Plant Capacity: 1–2 kW
- Average Monthly Electricity Consumption: 150–300 units → Suitable Rooftop Solar Plant Capacity: 2–3 kW
- Average Monthly Electricity Consumption: More than 300 units → Suitable Rooftop Solar Plant Capacity: Above 3 kW
Consumer Registration/Application- PMSGMBY

STEP 1: Log in to https://consumer.pmsuryaghar.gov.in/consumer/#/login
STEP 2: Enter mobile number and verify the same using OTP. After successful verification, enter your name, select your state, district and fill other details. Enter your email and verify with OTP, and click ‘save’ your profile
STEP 3: On vendor select popup click on ‘Yes’, if you want your vendor to fill the application for you or else ‘No’.
STEP 4: Click on ‘Apply for Solar Rooftop’ and select state, district, discom, consumer no. and click on ‘fetch details’ for auto pre-filling of required information, then click on next button to fill and submit the application.
STEP 5: Once you get the feasibility approval, select the vendor and submit your bank details to receive Subsidy
STEP 6: DISCOM does the Inspection and submits inspection details to consumer. After that, consumer redeems the subsidy and submits to NPIA.

Vendor Registration/Application- PMSGMBY
- STEP 1: Open the tab ‘Vendor login’ in the landing page -Vendor Page.
- STEP 2: For new registration click on ‘Register Now’.
- STEP 3: Select the type of company, enter company name, company PAN number, upload copy of company PAN card and then click on ‘Next Step’.
- STEP 4: Select Organisation, Enter Organisation Name, Username for login, Email ID, mobile number, address, password and confirm password, GST number, upload key manpower and training credentials, upload declaration as service provider, bank details etc.
- STEP 5: Verification of email and mobile number through OTP.
Capacity Building for PMSGMBY
PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana targets installation of 1 crore solar rooftops in residential sector. It is estimated that to undertake these targeted installations, the 1 lakh teams comprising 3-4 technicians working full time would be required. In order to ensure that sufficient teams are available at the ground level, to ensure better consumer experience and ensure quality installations under the scheme, it is imperative that skilling and capacity building of field personnel, including installation teams, design teams and vendors is undertaken in a structured and planned way.
Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) intends to impart training on installation, operation, maintenance and repairs of solar rooftop systems at grass root levels for ready availability of trained manpower to undertake the job roles of Technicians, Installers, Engineers, Supervisors, Vendors etc. for solar rooftop systems.
Additionally, the Capacity building of other relevant stakeholders is also to be undertaken, including DISCOM officials, banking/Financial Institution officials, officials and teams of other Ministries and Departments of Central and State Government (for effective convergence of efforts), State renewable energy development agencies (REDA), users etc. MNRE has issued comprehensive guidelines for skilling and capacity building under PMSGMBY vide OM dated 18th July, 2024.
The following are the aims and objectives of capacity building under PMSGMBY:
- To create more than 3 lakh skilled manpower, through fresh skilling, and up-skilling, under scheme component of capacity building, out of which at least 1,00,000 will be Solar PV Technicians.
- To undertake capacity building of DISCOMs, REDAs, Financial Institutions as well as officials, field units and stakeholders of other Ministries/Departments at the Centre and State levels, through constructive convergence of efforts.

Who is eligible to apply for the scheme?
Only Residential Consumers or Residential Welfare Societies (RWA). Other categories of consumers should not apply on this portal.
How to register for PMSGMBY?
Step 1: Visit the official website https://www.pmsuryaghar.gov.in/.
Step 2 : Login with Consumer Mobile number and then enter valid OTP. (Either vendor or consumer can fill out the application form, incase one selects vendor to fill the application, consumer needs to shortlist the vendor and then vendor will fill the application).
Step 3: Enter personal details, select your State, District, Electricity Distribution Company, Electricity Consumer Number and other details. For more details- Kindly go through the consumer manuals or training videos in Knowledge Centre section.
What are the documents required for registration?
Only bank-related documents (such as a cancelled cheque/copy of passbook, etc.) are mandatory. Additionally, the name of the consumer must be identical on the bank account and the DISCOM electricity bill. If there mismatch in the names, the consumer must update the name with the DISCOM or the bank to ensure they match. Uploading the electricity bill is optional.
How to apply for loan?
The National Portal is integrated with Jan Samarth Portal. Consumer can submit the loan application after login in National Portal as Jan Samarth Portal is integrated with Jan Samarth portal.
