International Yoga Day 2026 is observed globally every year on 21st June. On December 11, 2014, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted resolution 69/131 designating June 21st as the International Day of Yoga (IDY).

During the 69th UNGA session, India’s Hon. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi presented the proposal, which was endorsed by 175 Member States. He emphasized the importance of yoga by saying, “Yoga is an invaluable gift from our ancient tradition.” It represents a holistic approach that is beneficial to our health and well-being—unity of mind and body, thinking and action. Yoga is a method to find a deep sense of oneness with yourself, the universe, and nature; it’s not just about working out.”

International Yoga Day has been observed globally since 2015, and participation is growing each. Yoga is one of the better practices that the event promotes. The World Health Organization (WHO) has called on countries to encourage physical exercise because idleness is one of the main causes of mortality and a major indicator of risk for conditions including diabetes, cancer, and heart disease.

Governments, organizations, and individuals are encouraged to take involvement and raise knowledge of the advantages of yoga by the UN resolution on International Yoga Day.   • 100 Day Countdown Event: On March 13, 2026, a curtain-raiser event was held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi to officially kick off the country’s preparations for IDY 2026.The Hon’ble Minister of State (I/C) Ayush, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, introduced significant efforts at the occasion, such as “Yoga for Air Travel” and “10 Yoga Protocols for Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and Target Groups.” Furthermore, MDNIY and Habuild signed a Memorandum of Understanding to offer free daily online yoga sessions as part of the Ministry of Ayush’s Yoga 365 Campaign, encouraging year-round yoga practice.
  • 75-Day Countdown Event: On April 7, 2026, MDNIY, Ministry of Ayush, held Yoga Mahotsav-2026 in Chhatrapati Shri Shivaji Maharaj Udyan, Lonar, district Buldhana, Maharashtra. As the greatest crowd to execute Trikonasana, the event achieved a noteworthy milestone by being listed in the Asia Book of Records. Under the direction of Prof. (Dr.) Kashinath Samagandi, Director, MDNIY, about 5,000 people gathered at dawn to practice the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP), turning the ancient town of Lonar into a thriving hub of communal wellbeing. The event commemorated 75 days until the 12th IDY2026 and featured a number of the Ministry of Ayush’s main activities.
  • 50 Day Countdown Event: Held on May 2, 2026, at Kanha Shanti Vanam in Hyderabad, the event marked 50 days until International Yoga Day 2026. The Honorable Minister of State (I/C) Ayush and other high-ranking officials graced the occasion. With more than 5,000 participants, the event achieved a noteworthy milestone by becoming the largest gathering to practice “Bhujangasana” in the Asia Book of Records.
  • The Khajuraho Group of Monuments, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Madhya Pradesh, India, will host the 25-day countdown event.

The Ministry of Ayush’s “Yoga 365” campaign seeks to make yoga a daily national practice rather than just a symbolic annual celebration. It views yoga as an integral part of life and establishes a methodical manner for people, organizations, and communities to meaningfully practice it all year long.


Yoga 365 aims to make wellness accessible, inclusive, and habitual by promoting frequent involvement of the public, bolstering institutional adoption, and utilizing digital infrastructure. In addition to addressing growing worries about lifestyle-related illnesses and mental health, it presents yoga as an affordable, scalable option within India’s larger preventive healthcare approach.

The Ministry of Ayush and Habuild are providing a 100-day complimentary online course as part of Yoga 365. The sessions are appropriate for a wide range of participants, regardless of age, background, or location, because they are short, beginner-friendly, and simple to include into everyday routines. Beyond online classes, Yoga 365 will act as a catch-all for the Ministry of Ayush’s various yoga-related projects. To increase daily practice chances, this will involve partnerships with academic institutions, businesses, community organizations, and educational networks. 

Yoga may promote workplace well-being, everyday fitness, and preventative healthcare, as demonstrated by programs like Y-Break for corporate employees, the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP) for the general public, and therapeutic yoga protocols for disease treatment. When taken as a whole, these initiatives represent the larger goal of using yoga as a useful tool to enhance balance and health in day-to-day living.

PM Yoga Awards 2026- International Yoga Day

For people or organizations of Indian descent, there are two national awards, and for people of Indian or foreign descent, there are two international prizes. However, each candidate may only submit an application for one national or international category in a given year.

The nomination process started on February 21, 2026, and the deadline for submissions was April 5, 2026. Two panels oversee the organized selection process. The Ministry of Ayush established the Screening Committee and the Evaluation Committee. Based on predetermined standards, these committees evaluate and select the prize winners. A trophy, a certificate, and a cash award of INR 25 lakhs will be given to the winners.
